Thai beaches - any ideas?

Hey,

Katarina,
Love your name by the way. I am going to suggest something in the area. Just beautiful beaches in this area. Here are a few . is postcard pretty, but not many cheap places to stay. You can day-trip it from Krabi town. One island I want you to consider that still has the cheap huts is . Or perhaps. is off of Ao Nang Beach and might be one to look at as well.

I would get to Krabi town and stay there your first night. Then I would chat with several travel shops and tell them your budget and what you are looking for. There are lesser know beaches and resorts that they might recommend that are in your budget. Good luck with your planning.

Hey,

Thanks so much! Your links are really helpful! Really gives me something to go on...it looks amazing.

Cheers!!

Kat

Agreed about staying in Krabitown- there are tons of small islands and gorgeous beaches within a 30 minute local bus or boat ride of Krabi, and hotels in Krabi were literally less than 1/3 the price of staying out on the beaches themselves... and still nearly as accessible. Plus the town has an interesting sort of relaxed charm to it, and as Vegasmike said- it's a great jumping-off point to all the gorgeous, and (as of yet) not so terribly exploited islands of the Andaman coast. Koh Lanta is brilliant, and quite low-key if that's what you're looking for!

If you're a backpacker, avoid Phuket and Koh Samui (the two biggest resort islands) at all costs. Incredibly expensive, over-rated, and bears zero resemblence to real Thailand. You can hit up Koh Pha-Ngan for a couple days if you're looking to party, and it's fun for maybe 3 days tops, but I'd recommend Koh Tao juust to north... way chill, but also a great place to get dive certified, and probably the cheapest place on Earth to get it.

Lucky for you, the time you're looking at going is off-season, and everythings is usually MUCH cheaper, so you'll probably be able to stay in nicer places (ie. Bungalows that are literally right on the shore, halfway in the water!) for the same price as crap places in, say, November.

I agree with the comments on Krabi, and of the beaches I have been to in Thailand Krabi is the one I would recommend most. Phi Phi is beautiful but a little more expensive, and Phuket and Koh Samui are very commercialised and touristy. There are some nice parts of both however: in Phuket I stayed in Hat Karon which has a nice beach and is much more pleasant than Patong, the main strip in Phuket. In Koh Samui I stayed in Wiesenthal resort on Ban Taling Ngam beach in a gorgeous little bungalow. It was quiet and unspoilt and not nearly as commercialised as Lamat and Chaweng.

why not try the little maldives of thailand Koh Lipie, the name itself spell out the unit place with beach life..
cheap accormodation, funtastic beach activities, diving place and also snookling heaven.

this is the 1st place of all major beach i had in thailand, whereas Ao Nang, Phuket, Trang, Krabi, Koh Samui may be a good place for you to have a try...

Follow the link to Tezza's Thai beaches and islands guide. One of the best resources out there. Should give you plenty of ideas:

Other than that, you can also try Cha Am or Huahin which are near to Bangkok.

For your timeframe I would definately head to the Andaman Sea.

The islands around Krabi are awesome and you can easily do a little island hopping while your tere.

We have some pics, maps and stories of island trips here... [snip] that may help.

Happy & safe travels

Bob

Happy and safe travels

Kat
