Hey all,
You could try your local library, there are many books about volunteering opportunities.
I see next to your name , USA, because your citizenship unfortunately affects opportunities. I know FULLY funded opportunities for British and EU citizens, but as for across the pond, we're so jealous of the Peace Core over here. Also what age are you and what skills do you have, that could put you in good stead?
Well yes, I'm a US citizen but I'm also an Irish citizen. . The only problem is my girlfriend is coming along on the trip and she's a US citizen. What do you think?
As far as skills, I am very good with computers. I've been working in the IT field for a couple of years now. I'd also be interested in just general education/teaching, building/construction, etc. You know, things that don't require too much skill.
We're not planning on long-term volunteering, we're interested in short-term projects along the way.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ry
Hi! My husband and I were also looking for a volunteering opportunity that didn't charge "administration fees", just your dedication and time. We found a charity in Cambodia called "I am Cambodia" that only asks that you are able to commit a minimum of a week of your time to either teach in the local school, or help with building a new wing. We have not had the pleasure of experiencing it yet due to our indecisiveness in sorting out our summer break 2010, but it sounds cool.
If you do give it a go, can you please keep us posted?
Good luck!
Christine
Hey all,
I'm interested in finding out about volunteer options in any of the following countries: Egypt, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
I'm not looking to go through an agency that costs an arm and a leg. I want a true volunteer opportunity with no outrageous fees. I know there are some great opportunities out there but they are so few and far between.
Does anybody have any advice on volunteering in any of the above countries. Have you volunteered along the way during your trip? If so, where and what did you think of the experience. I really want to help out and give back along the way.
Please give me a hand! :D
Thanks,
Ry

Hi Guys,
I am doing volunteer work this year in Ecuador and Argentina with IFRE Volunteers Abroad, an American company.
I am not sure how good they are but they do not seem to charge half as much as many of the other companies. The staff said they are not out to make profits from their volunteers. I was a little worried about just handing over my money to some company I found on the net so I emailed the American embassy (In Oz) and they gave me some websites to use to chase up the validity of the company. I do not have the sites any more I am sorry, but if you are using an organisation from overseas it is probably not a bad idea. One of my friends did volunteer work in Vietnam and did no research on the company, she was worried she would turn up in the country only to find nothing and no one at the other end.
I would love to hear about experiences though. I will not be arriving in South America until the end of the year, so it would be good to know a little bit about what to expect.
