Is there a way to have a selection of photos in the photo gallery inserted into a slideshow that can be imbedded into ones blog??
Apologies for the delay in replying... this thread has been open in a tab on my browser for a few days now!
Were you thinking of a slideshow that pops up like the one that you can play using the button on the left of for example (great photos by the way!)? Or one that's embedded within the blog and can just be scrolled through within the blog post?
A few weeks ago Peter and me were discussing using (see the Image Set example on that page) to automatically turn any images in a post into a 'slideshow'. Whilst it wouldn't be much work to do this for images going forward, all the old images inserted wouldn't work. Is that what you were thinking?
It would also kind of fix the issue with pop ups as we have it now, as it would default to the largest size. That's actually what originally triggered Peter and my email discussion on this.
Clearly we have to do something here, as the current solution is outdated, at best. Your thoughts/ideas, and those of others, would be most welcome!
Oh please, no lightbox! That is such a cliched and overrated way of showing images by now.
Ok Sander, please spill.. what would be a better way of doing it I agree lightbox is a bit of a cliche, but I kind of think it is the best available option for enlarging images at the moment
Though, to be clear, when we say lightbox, we're actually referring to a jquery equivalent, not the original prototype one.
Thanks Sam.
I was thinking of embedding a slideshow somewhere in ones post or on the side bars so one doesnt leave the blog.
I do also like your idea of the 'lightbox' idea, this way when one clicks on a thumbnail they can see the original image larger and move to the next image in the blog post at the same time?
or even the popup slideshow that you can see in ones gallary (like you suggested) would be good I guess. But with the option of having it access directly from ones blog rather than going to the persons gallery and then clicking slideshow
Thanks Sam.

The only problem with the embedded ones, is that you have to then specify all the photos you want to include in that slideshow. Which means creating slideshows separately, quite a bit of extra hassle for users that I'm not sure would be done. With the lightbox idea, all the photos within the entry automatically become a slideshow in the popup which kind of loads 'over' the blog, but doesn't take you totally away from the blog. If you clicked on the 3rd photo in the post, it would tell you there are 2 before that for example and give you prev/next links for example. So there's no extra work, but you can still view the photos as a slidehow.
I think this is fairly doable, although I'd be more than happy to have some kind of embeddable slideshow as well if some software already exists we could use for this. In that case it would probably have to be pretty automated though, so you could say add a tag, [slideshow|peru] and it would then create a slideshow with all your photos from Peru. The real downside then is that older photos start showing (if you've been twice), you can't pick and choose the best pics etc. Of course you can create ways around all of that too, but then it becomes quite a lengthy process to put together a slideshow, which leads back to one of my first concerns, ie. that no one would end up using it (and this option would be a lot more work to code as well).
Anyway, good to hear some thoughts from different people around this!
What about ?
Sam, instead of [Slideshow|Peru], perhaps we can use [Slideshow|tripID] instead?
What about ?
Not bad. We'll probably try and use something we're already using elsewhere in terms of code overlap, but that does look nice.

Currently photos aren't actually linked to a tripid, so that would be rather hard to do But there are some options, ie. slideshow|tag, slideshow|location, slideshow|user... none really feel ideal to me though, hence I think something that just turns all photos in a post into a slideshow would make most sense. That way you could have a slideshow of the too for example. What would be really nice is if it could be done inline in some way!?
all good points.
However, for me, and maybe for other people too, I upload several posts per country, so if a slideshow was used, it would be nice to do if for only a selection of photos or a group, say Lima, Peru, based on the location you enter when one uploads the photos? And not by tripID, unless it can be filtered to TripID AND [Slideshow|Peru] ??
I can also see that putting together a slideshow can be a lot of work but I guess one doesn’t have to use it if they find to too much work. Also sometimes I've found I don’t always want to put up a load of pics on the post but still want people to see them, this way one can put a few thumbnails and the rest are seen in the slideshow??
Hien: I like that suggestion, looks smart too.
