Hi,
I wouldn't stay too long in Bangkok if I were you. 3-4 days max. After that you should go to Chiang Mai. You can go by bus/train/plane. Depends on what you want to spend ofcourse. Although I can definitely recommend taking the sleepertrain to Chiang Mai. It takes around 12-14 hours to get there but it's real enjoyable.
You can do a trek for 1/2/3 days if you like or take a thai cooking class and you can visit the city and enjoy it's nice relaxed atmosphere.
There are more things to visit in the north but I haven't been there so I can't really recommend anything besides Chiang Mai.
If you plan on going south, there are several nice islands you can go to, but it's up to you to decide which one(s) you'll visit. If you like peace and quiet and you want to do scuba diving you should visit Ko Tao. Or you can go to one of the many parties at Ko Phangan. Do some research and decide which ones you want to visit.
Thanks - everyone seems to be recommending Chang Mai which sounds great but i also want some down time at some of the gorgeous beaches
I went to Thailand in March this year, my trip in short;
Bangkok - 3 days, absolutely loved the craziness of the city. Recommend Rambutti Rd rather than Khoa San - much more chilled out, still loads of bars and eateries but none of the thumping music and drunk teenagers of KS! We went upmarket the second time (pre-flying home) we were there and stayed at the New Siam 2 - still not very expensive but had a swimming pool and did breakfast.
Chiang Mai - Lovely, relaxed city. Great night markets and mroe temples than you can possibly count - every one slightly different. Did an overnight jungle trek and stayed in a Thai mountain village. Bits of it were staged - the local kids came to sing for us expecting money - but a brilliant experience. Also included an elephant ride & river rafting.
Koh Phi Phi - Bit of a party island but still quite relaxed. Loely beaches and excellent Phad Thai from stalls in the street.
I've done a couple of RTW trips (Aus, Nz, USA, Hong Kong, Singapore...) and Thailand is my favourite place so far
If you head to Chaing Mai, on the way there stop for a day at the Elephant Conservation Park in Lampang - its fantastic. You can do a day course to learn to be a mahout (elephant driver) - nicer than sitting in the baskets on their backs, and you get to know all about the work they are doing at the centre. Its an amazing experience.
For 2 weeks I would spend 2-3 days in Bangkok with an overnighter to Kanchanaburi
Head up to Chiang Mai for 3 days and a side excursion to Chiang Rai for 2 days. The white temple alone is enough reason to go to CR.
Lastly, finish off down South at the islands and for your timeframe I would head to the Krabi region.
We have some pics, maps and stories on our trips to the above locations on the link below.

Happy & safe travels

Try hitting up Ayyuttaya, Wat Phrao, Pattaya, depends what ur looking for tho, can be more specific? what you like to do? beaches, nightlife, trekking?
I actually love Bangkok and stayed there for several days always finding something new - once you get used to the city and realize it's just organized chaos it's actually pretty nice.
I liked Koh Tao allot, so much that my 3 days there turned into 2 weeks. It may not have the most glorious beaches but it's laid back and it's cheap to rent a kayak and take a trip around the island. You can find allot of nice, secluded beaches that way.
