delhi, mumbai, jaipur, by train

Hi
Any advice on travelling between delhi mumbia and jaipur by train, is it safe, is it possible. thanks

Hi Rick,
This is very doable and can be very inexpensive. Check out the india railways website, just google it and you can get times rates and classes of tickets for all the different routes. As an example, you can travel from Chennai to Delhi, a 32 hour trip for as little as $6 or as much as $72 depending on whether you ride on a space available and there is always space available though it may be on the roof, or in a First class sleeper car. They have trains that stop at virtualy every station and others that are more express types that make only a few scheduled stops between major cities. It is safe although safer in the private cars but in the lowest class you will get an experience you will not get in the other classes as far as mixing with the locals and getting to try the different types of cuisines that the country has to offer as you will be bombarded with food hawkers at every stop selling to the riders on the train. Can be a lot of fun but also very tiringB
and crowded depending on the time of year and destination. Last week in Delhi and Agra it was very crowded just about everywhere, over 40,000 in one day at the Taj while I was there. Best to go at times other than holidays.

will get you timetables and fares. Trains are not very often completely sold out (standing room is usually possible). If you aren't Indian, you can book on sold-out trains under the Foreigner Quota (one of the options when checking availability in the above site). Sleeper class is great - very cheap, and the reserved sleeper berth is exactly the same in the air-con classes.
