1t has indicated that this thread is about India

Welcome to India. Are you member of International Youth Hostel Association, you can plan to stay their hostel at New Delhi. Regarding carryong cash, you can use credit and debit card for payments and withdraw from ATM. It is safe, in case any problem, please contact nearest Tourist office, there are torist offices of Government of India and state Governments, you can get the details from inter net. In case any further info you may contact me.

Wish you all the best, I will be interested to know about your experience.

Wish you season's greetings

Hi Mark,

For accomodation per night you will require max Rs 500 per night in a clean and secure place. To stay in youth hostels etc. ou will need less.

For food you will require about Rs 200 per day .

For your travels through India as per your plan you may require about Rs 20000 for a six month tour.

Yes, you can draw cash from ATMs. If you can access net for paying up for cash withdrawl , interest to be paid will be less. Internet parlours are available everywhere.

Visting shrines will not cost anything.

Partying will cost you around Rs 300-400 per night including drinks .

Attending yoga or sitar classes for a month will cost you approx. Rs 3000 max. that's my best guess.

You can save on a selective basis depending on your budget and spensings.

Hope this helps.

Best of Luck

Ranjan

Ranjan and Sush, thank you so much for your help. It is very much appreciated. I cannot wait now to get over there!

Seasons greetings to you both

Mark

Anyway, I am trying to work a very rough budget out for India and wondered if anyone could give me an idea of how much, either weekly or monthly, I should expect to spend. The places I have planned to visit so far are: Kerala, Goa, Mumbai, Agra, Delhi.

You would need to factor in a minimum of 100 USD for a week, which will include a basic room, food, water bottles, entrance tickets and other basic necessities. Also keep in mind that you will need to travel quite a lot as Kerala is more than 2000Kms from Delhi. Travellling cost is extra, which can be brought down if u try to take overnight trains for most of the destinations. Have a look at the official Indian rail website( www.indianrail.gov.in) for more details on train routes, timings and fares !!!

I've also joined a site called couchsurfing.com, where you can stay with families in whatever country. Is anyone else a member who has used this in India? Is it safe?

Couch surfing concept is relatively new in India, so before latching on to any couch, ensure that the person sounds reasonable !

You can save alot of money by travelling 3rd class sleeper it is totally safe and assuming your not a leggy blonde girl in tiny shorts you will have a great time and meet alot of cool and friendly people, plus its ALOT less money than what most tourists choose AC1, AC2 and a better temperature.
hope that helps you have a great trip

ps. if you cant get a seat reserved on the train just get on anyway the fine is usually not alot more than the cost of the ticket

You can save alot of money by travelling 3rd class sleeper

There is no 3rd class sleeper on Indian trains. To make things simple it is either 2nd class sleeper which is non-airconditioned or the AC coaches !!!

if you cant get a seat reserved on the train just get on anyway the fine is usually not alot more than the cost of the ticket

This is not recommended.... If sleeper tickets are not available, try for day trains which have coaches having seats and these are normally easily available even a day before the departure and sometimes on the day of departure itself

my mistake i must have gotten mixed up, there is ac 1,2,3 and then sleeper class.

of course getting onto trains without tickets is not advisable but as they say anything is possible in india and if you must be on the train to make a connection i think its helpful to know that something that is unthinkable in the west can be done without major hassle but a little embarrasment

hey mark,

my estimate would be 300-350 pounds a month
if on shoe-string; all travel would need to be done by buses and train, hence plan your route accordingly...land up delhi and work downwards south or vice versa
couchsurfing is safe..but is effective only if u n the host think alike and gel well..hence u need to interact in advance .. if u have 2 weeks start writing to people now..else last minute requests might not be have positive results
am sure u will have a lovely time..keep us posted
cheers!

hey Mark.

Around 350 pounds a month is good money to travel . Couchsurfing in India is safe but be sure to let them know much in advance. Do let me know if planning to visit the Himalayas.
