Hostel or Guesthouse?

Travelling around Asia in the future, which do you prefer to stay in.. a Hostel or a Guesthouse? i'm new to both of these, which would you reccommend for a backpacker and which one is more common and generally cheaper?

so far, to me, there are the same in pricing and room.

may be the prices wont be of that much of differences, but if security and amenities are a major concern I would prefer none of these...rather I would go for govt approved Bed and breakfast accommodation.now a days its a very comfortable, peaceful, safe as well as affordable option for anyone from backpacking to a long term planned trip alone or with family.

you can check this with tripadvisor.

take care.

In my experience a guesthouse is the same as a bed & breakfast in most of the world. We certainly use the term for both on our Personally I don't think it matters which you choose either, but it depends on what you are after. Guesthouses are usually a little quieter than hostels, which usually have a large common area. That being said, the boundary is blurry and I've stayed at hostels that could call themselves guesthouses, as well as vice versa...

For me a "hostel" in Asia often means lots of young backpackers. Also it could mean shared accommodations like dorms and shared showers and toilets. When I see adult males over 50 years old choosing a hostel over a similar or closely priced guest house/hotel (my opinion) is that they are choosing that place for the shared showers, bunk rooms, urinals and teenage boys! Kids may choose a hostel because they have little money and probably no real good paying jobs because they are kids. Older adults with jobs should be able to afford a place where they have private facilities!

In Thailand, for Bangkok, you can get a hotel with air conditioning, private toilet/shower, TV, maid service, security storage and sometimes even a refrigerator starting around 600 baht. Other smaller cities even cheaper. Traveling during high season, especially close to or on the Christmas - New Years holidays could be more expensive than other times of the year.

When it comes time for your travel around Asia plan your budget out and when you know what you can afford for your hotel/hostel/guest house mention that price. The suggestions you get will be around the price you can afford. If you are a young kid maybe a hostel being around other young kids will work out. If you are an old fart male choose a hotel!

I agree with kazazyla, hostel means that you have to share room with other people, sleep as dormitory, and guesthouse maybe you don't have to share rooms with other but price of both categories is the same as far as i know

If you are a solo backpacker, I recommend a hostel. You'll make friends, travel to other places with some of them and have good company.
