Sleep section

Do we still need to have the 3 separate sections for the Sleep section. In my opinion it looks a bit messy to leave these titles in/

Yeah, I agree. I think this is partly due to the 'old' days where we didn't have the accommodation tables, but also partly due to pulling in only budget accommodation from our accommodation area. I'd prefer to just list all in one table and then have some kind of way of breaking out the 'type'. Obviously it's fine for hostels, guesthouses, but you can have a 5 star hotel with a 90% rating and a 1 star hotel also with a 90% rating for totally different reasons.

Alternatively, maybe we automatically pull in some kind of 'from price' to indicate what kind of a hotel it is? That would probably be a lot more reliable than star ratings which seem to vary quite heavily depending on the country!

Some other sleep question:

Do we really have to include everything into a table, or are we still 'free' to give a brief overview of a place? I mean, I don't want to mix up tripadvisor with the sleep section here in the TP article, but only mentioning it in a table is something which I'll probably pass. I want to give firsthand info as a result of travelling, instead of just mentioning places.

So, before I include property and someone else just puts into a table: is this still possible?
I know the accom is important and growing on TP, but putting everything into an inpersonal table is rather boring and not something that is ment to be in a guide. Check wikipedia/travel for better listing options.

Fair point Michael. I think you're right, and we probably have to find some way of doing this that keeps it both structured, but also allows the freedom to include some sentences about a property. I'll ask Peter, as he's more likely to have some kind of brilliant idea about how this can be done technically speaking

The wikitravel listings might work well when there are only a handful of them. But can you imagine those listings if you have several hundred places. Ouch.

Also, one major benefit we have with the table format is that people can sort it and search it easily.

I'm not sure, maybe there is a way of achieving these benefits without using a table layout, but it does become a little harder.

And yes, you can add more information into the table. You just need to have a "Description" heading in the table and put everything under there. An example of where this is done is in the article. The description shows up as an "info" icon that you can hover over to see the full description. Allows putting a lot of content in a relatively small area.

Thanks Peter and fair as well of course.

I am not really keen on the info icon, although of course it works a bit. I would only use the listings for places that have few, if any, accommodations in the standard table. I did that for the article earlier and would like to mention a few on the article, just with some more inside information.

I guess that is still allowed as well?
Cheers
Mike

I've done the same in the Oslo guide, though admittedly those that I've written most about are the ones that aren't really budget. But yes, as far as I'm concerned adding properties that way is definitely still a go. Especially as long as there is no better way to do this in a structured fashion.

just brainstorming

Maybe a different approach: If you really have things to add, place this in the review for the specific accommodation. Additionally we could introduce something like (forgive me) Lonely Planet does in their books, and have an editors choice type of approach. One (or maybe in big cities a couple) of highlighted accommodations per type. If this could be done on the bases of a minimum of reviews made by TP members, that would be perfect imo. (and might even be possible automatically???)

As far as I know, reviews are only possible for budget places, which generally have enough info in the accom tables, including some extra description if you want.

Didn´t know that : )

So now you know which kind of accom I use ...
