Cage Shark Diving

I will be visiting Cape Town in April and would looove to go Cage Shark Diving. I would like to do this in a way that effects the sharks as little as possible. I heard they bite the cages...surely this harms the sharks?! Any opinions or advise?? I am a qualified diver (Advanced) has anybody dived in the area...? Thanx!

HI,
Diving with great white sharks is a real cool experience. The secret however is choosing a responsible operator - there is 8 licensed operators in Gansbaai (the mecca for the great whites!) Look out for the Fair Trade in Toursim logo. I can recommend White Shark Projects - www.whitesharkprojects.co.za
Be aware that it is not really a scuba diving experience, you are in a cage and it works on a breathholding system. The sharks come close to the cage, they don't always bite it, sometimes they do bump against it - they are extremely curious beings.
As said, all operators do not work the same, but I know White Shark Projects work according a high ethos.
let me know how you liked the experience!

is also reputable. I know them via the volunteer program they run where you get to go out on the boats, but I believe they started as a conservation company .

btw CharmaineBeukes, I think it'd be good to disclose you actually work for that company... clearly saying that affects how people view your recommendation, but you leave a lot worse of an impression by putting through a recommendation as if you don't work for them...

hi sam-i-am, sorry you feel that way, I never hide where I work, that's who I am, not doing it under any hidden names...just giving fair advise I see it as, and btw we actually have a very good working-relationship with MD, as you might know, we are the only two fair trade accredited companies. In the end I am also just a traveller sharing my experiences, and recommending what I know - same than you!

Well, the fact that you are marketing manager for the company is actually a pretty big deal when your original post just seems to be a recommendation as if it's the only company you knew of. You are clearly not neutral and have a vested interest, which I don't, one way or the other. Some people might call what you did spam, and most reputable companies do not like to be associated with that. In some countries, the UK for example, there are even laws being passed that make it illegal to comment online without disclosure like you did. Anyway, just a heads up

well sam, thanks for your opinion, will make sure I run any further comments by you - just so i don't get myself in trouble.
As for bugbitten - as said before, there is 8 licensed operators, have a look at the SA Tourism website for all their details http://www.southafricantourism.net/
some advise- sticking to my opinion:
-make sure you use a reputable company - either Fair Trade in Tourism accredited or SATSA registered - don't be tempted by going with the cheapest companies!

sorry - it is www.southafrica.net
