Riding from USA to Brazil in 2012!!!

Hi Everyone!!!
I am considering riding a motorcycle from USA to Brazil... staying in a few places for a month or two to explore the place.
Here are my questions: Is the trip doable? How dangerous is it in Colombia for a young... and single... woman? Can I skip Colombia entirely?
Did anyone do the route before? What are the fastest and safest routes??????
Thanks a lot for your time!

First off, most trips are 'doable' with the right amount of planning. You will be able to 'play it by ear' for some things, but you will need a plan of attack on others.

A few questions:

  • Are you using your own bike for the trip?
  • Do you have a budget yet?
  • Are you working with a finite amount of time?

One obstacle will the the Darien Gap between Panama and Colombia. You will have to ship the bike (and possibly yourself) from a Panamanian port to a Colombian or Venezuelan port (if you decide to skip Colombia). There are no roads through the Gap. You can ship your bike, book airfare and meet it at your next destination or find a carrier who will allow you passage (at a fee) also. (Part of the 'plan of attack' thing.)

I can not reply to the safety of Colombia. I have not been there personally. Most will say Colombia is safe as long as you are aware of your surroundings and use common sense.

I do recommend starting a separate thread in the requesting information about the safest routes for entering Mexico. Violent crimes have escalated in a number of border towns in the past several months. There are members who will be able to help with that issue. (Those members don't always check this forum.)

Sounds like a great trip - happy planning!
