Road Trip Around USA

Hi!

Emma,
You have time to compare your choices. I have tried to find an RV rental for several members over the years. The costs are just too high. When you add the weekly rental fees, mileage fees and cost of petrol, hiring an RV will not be a realistic option. W/o making any phone calls, I know a RV rental for 3 months will be over $5K, plus fuel costs. Since most larger RVs get around 10 mpg, figure appox. $300 for every 1K miles you drive. LA to the east coast and back is minimum 7K miles. This is w/o much north/south travel. Realistically, figure you will drive at least 9K in your trip around the US. Add $3K in fuel costs if you are driving an RV for 100 days. I would budget at least $10K for 100 days in the US driving a rental RV. Here is one place. Pick the size you want, plug in your dates, calculate your costs. Insurance will add to your total. I was over $7K w/o fuel costs.

I would suggest buying a van or smaller RV. I can find vans big enough to sleep in for under $4K everyday. Or a smaller RV like the camper might be a good compromise. OK mileage, enough room to live in, easy to drive, not expensive. Sell it when you are finished with it.

Another option is to buy a small. fuel efficient car. Something that gets over 30 mpg. I would only buy a Toyota or Honda. More reliable. Stay in hostels, motels, buy a tent & camp or perhaps

Good luck with your planning.
