Me and my friend are doing a RTW next year (India, China, S.E Asia, Oz etc), and we thought we would start looking into it now. But when we started looking into our intinerary we realised we don't even know were to start?! We know what sort of route were going to be travelling along already but how do you start planning where you want to go? and how much detail to put into it? Im not sure whether to just write a rough route and then think about it more when were there or plan it down to little details such as hostels available in different areas, how to get around the country (bus routes, trains etc).

I love planning and had my whole RTW down to a tee before we left, nothing solidly booked but I knew what the best hostel was in every area we were going to etc etc.. And then we took off and it all went out the window!
Honestly there is no point planning minute details, things change constantly and you meet people and travel with them for a while, or change routes after talking to others. The best thing to do is do as much research as possible before you leave, read about the countries you are going to and plan the important things like money, backup copies of travel docs, insurance etc then pack a map and a guide book and set off, if you have a guide book at least you can always find places to stay and important numbers etc.
