Travelling alone to Melbourne at the end of August. Want to book a hostel for maybe 3 nights just so I have somewhere to go. Anyone no where is cheap and friendly to go and easy to make friends???

Probably the cheapest place you'll find is through hostelbookers - I've compared the same place before on a few sites and that tends to be the cheapest. YHA avoid unless you will make good use of the paid membership.
Melbourne is popular with travellers so you are bound to meet people at the hostel......check the hostel reviews though as they generally give a good idea about whether it is lively and popular with backpackers or not
Have you also thought of house sitting - quite an acceptable form of free accommodation in Oz - you house sit (generally for free) and in return you walk/feed the pets etc. Check out www.aussiehousesitters.com.au
You might get lucky there, especially if you are there over a weekend or holiday when an aussie wants to leave Melbs for a few days. Downside to this is you are less likely to meet people, unless you hang out at pubs popular with backpackers

Melbourne is a very popular place as far as tourism is consult.You can make your move towards "All Nations City Backpackers".Its Cheap as compared to others and you can easily find a friendly environment there.You can also take the help from net and check the reviews of the hostels.
