Hey all, im goin to australia in afew weeks and wondering what the story is with driving over there. Cani just bring my own full irish driving licence and use that for the whole time im over there, or do i have to apply for an international driving permit? thanks
You haven't mentioned what visa you're going on, but I'm presuming it will be a working holiday visa? In that case, yes your Irish driving licence (presuming it's in English as well as Irish) will be sufficient to drive in Australia.
Not sure what the case is in Ireland, but note that in Australia you should always have your licence on you when driving.

We've just arrived in Perth on a WHV and have already applied for a Western Australian Driving Licence. We'd read that if you were planning to drive around for more than 2 weeks of your time here then you need to get a driving licence. It's also used as ID for almost everything (they wont accept your English/Irish Driving Licence as ID over here) so if you don't want to carry your passport around with you everywhere it's worth getting one. We've paid $76 for a years licence, you need proof of address, so you need a bank account first.

Just to reiterate what mojorob said (Nicola: I suspect that you got it, but the way your post is written, it's easy to read it as if you're disagreeing):
You do not need a local driver's license when you're in Australia on a temporary visa, such as the working holiday visa. The "two weeks" thing (I thought it was 30 days actually) only applies if you're in Australia on a permanent visa.

Personally I think $76 is a bit steep of a price for "not having to carry your passport with you".
