Traveling via the trains in the holiday season(Spring Festival) can be a bit challenging. And flights might cost more, since the entire nation will be busy going places.
But this year, I will get to see this mass of people in trains. It can be interesting, if you travel lite and you don't ultra crowded train stations or airports.
Chinese New Year is sometime in Febuary. I'm not saying you shouldn't go. It's just saying, a lot of people will be traveling during time. But they would probably stay home with their families, so the tourist won't be as crowded as it was last week.
Chinese New Year is early this year... officially 23 January 2012 is the start of the Year of the Dragon.
Depending on where you will be, it is usually still cold and wintry, even though it is also known as spring festival. It is the time that most Chinese people return to visit their families, which is why travel around China is busy, and prices are high.
That being said, there are celebrations everywhere, with fireworks and fire crackers being set off for 15 days straight and everyone is in a joyous mood, because of the extended holiday, which makes it a nice time for all.

I think both Swept Away and Abby have provided some very useful information for you Keef.
The 1st day of Chinese New Year will fall on 23 January 2012. So most parts of China are still very cold except the South part I guess.
And you will have no idea how crowded it could be in the train/bus station during festive season! You will definitely terrified by the experience like I do last time. Do not forget the fact you will be travelling in a country that has the highest population in the world haha.
Please also take note that many elderly people that I came across who are the big fans of China told me that Chinese nowadays are richer now and most merchants will not open their shops even those in tourist places during Chinese New Year. Anyway, the statement might not be true.
Having said all, China is a country that definitely worth visiting. For me, the country offers the best sceneries ever among the countries that I have visited thus far.

to all of you for your feedback, left me a bit daugnted though! (haha) it was mainly the views and the culture and the buildings i wanted to see. gona have about 3-4 grand, duno if that will last me 4 china as well (travelling for 4 months)

Wow, chines New Year so cook, should come there to enjoy, but most the shop close in a week for Tet celebration.
If you are there for the sights and the culture... and for FIREWORKS and crowded train stations and crowds galore everywhere, then pick another date... You are not gonna miss much, if you skip the new year... You can see fireworks and Dragon dances everywhere in Asia, because all the China towns will be celebrating.
I thought you wanted to go to Beijing and be one with the crowd to see fireworks in the freezing cold. I didn't know the New Year will come early this year. But I am glad it does. I will be traveling to a very remote county for this new year, then I am off to a TROPICAL COUNTRY, when the new year is over.
I will be travelling through china during CNY.
Already have trains booked (not issued ticket until 60 days before).
I have been advised by so many people not to travel in China at this time, but I am seeing the Harbin ice festival, Beijing, and will be spending CNY in Hong Kong, I am looking forward to it.
I am excited to see how busy the stations will be, it is an experience in its own right!
