Say hello to people. Ask them questions about Melbourne, even if you know the answers to them. Ask them about bars and such worth visiting and the nightlife in Melbourne and maybe you'll get invited along.
The thing about hostels and such is that they are full of transitory people. They are often there days or a week and gone so not a lot of chance to bond.
Which one are you at? I know has great reviews and a good reputation, but it doesn't actually sound 'small' if that's what you are after?
I stayed at The Mansion in January and found it pretty good with some decent people about
