£4,500 should be enough! Ive just travelled Cairns to Sydney spent like £2,500 over 8 weeks
however this included hop on hop off travel (i took greyhound which worked out cheapest) ammodation, skydive, whitsudays, fraser island, to name the highlights and biggest expenses. there are plenty of choices when it comes to everything, so it depends how expensive you want to go, I if your worried about money, there are opportunities to work for accomodation, which may be 1 1/2 hours cleaning a day.
I havent been to NZ, but it is cheaper there, it may be better to skydive in NZ as it is cheaper and also higher - 15,000 feet whereas OZ limit is 14,000 feet.
The best thing for me on the east coast was fraser island

Thanks for the response. I am going to do the greyhound service in both countries so hopefully this should save some money. That sounds like a reasonable amount for 2 months! I am pretty disciplined so hopefully I can do this with some money left over at the end as I am off to Thailand after i finish in Australia.
I am planning to do most of the activities in New Zealand but am definately looking to fraser island.
