how much money you plan to spend? and where are you from?
Oh for crying out loud just suck it up!
If you're "dying" to go to the Seychelles (they're spectacular) and since budget is not an issue then just do it.
If going that far really is too freaky for you then at the very least get out of the US. You're in one of the best transport hubs in the western hemisphere to exit from, at least go as far as Central/South America or the Caribbean. (Seriously, Florida?... Come on...)

Wow, CheersT...real lovely response there. It's not "too freaky" by any means. I'm just not interested in the hassle of spending 22+ hours traveling by myself and then dealing with jet lag when I get to my destination. No need to be so damn snarky about it, it's a personal preference!
And, I'd be perfectly happy going somewhere in the US if it had all the things I was looking for in a vacation. There are plenty of great places to go, and a good time doesn't necessarily equal traveling far distances. On that note, though, might I remind you that while I said I'm intrigued by Islamorada...I'm asking for OTHER suggestions.

Cool out, skay210. On one hand you say budget is no issue and you're "dying" to go to Seychelles then on the other hand you're freaked out over long travel times. That makes no sense.
My only point was that as a wannabe traveller with no budget constraints then at least make the jump where you leave the US and have to use a Passport. If that's still too freaky for you then don't bother posting on a travel forum, simply go to your nearest Travel Agent and pick up some Florida brochures.
Honestly though, you really should consider something just a tiny bit out of your usual comfort zone, just this one time. Who knows, it might open up a whole new world for you.

PS My suggestion... Cuba. It hits all your "must have's" plus it's within one day travel plus its political status means it's still "unique" and not overrun with American tourists yet.
Budget is no issue. I AM dying to go to the Seychelles. If it was about 10 hours closer I'd be there in a heartbeat. I am NOT "freaked out" over long travel times. My job keeps me very busy, days off are few and far between, and I'd rather not waste several of those days with "travel" vs "vacation" time. Get it?
It's also not like I've never been out of the country. I've done several cities in Europe, and Cancun/Mexico, but all with a travel partner. I'm looking for something safe to do solo, and beachy/tropical, which is why I'm asking for advice - because I'm not as sure of options with those criteria.
I've heard plenty of great things about Islamorada. Why not go there if it's really that amazing? It's a short trip, meaning I get to maximize my time vacationing/relaxing, which is a HUGE upside, but might I point out again that I am specifically ASKING FOR OTHER SUGGESTIONS. Jesus.
If you are an American citizen, you can cross off Cuba without having a special visa (promotional, news, etc.). It won't be happening unless you you are willing to hand over your passport to the country of your exit (not including the US). We could go to Cuba as long as we left our passports in Jamaica. Want to visit Cuba but not at that expense.
For sun, beaches and something within an 8 hour travel time, I can recommend some of the Caribbean islands. I'd say checkout Antigua, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, etc. Islamorada is supposed to be very fun - I've only driven through the key on my way to other Florida destinations.
Most of the Caribbean islands are safe for the solo traveler. Even Jamaica (my favorite) is good if you keep your wits about you. Things have declined over recent years - but. again, it's a matter of paying attention to your surroundings.
Also, there are some islands off of California or Texas that may be worth checking out...

Terry, I understand the aspect of "just suck it up" and the "too freaky" thing. I see it all of the time. BUT, we do not have all the details as far as skay210's time, etc. Obviously, they are not afraid to travel abroad as they have been on such trips with a travel companion.

100% incorrect, Isadora. Nothing you posted about Cuba has anything whatsoever with the actual reality of visiting there as an American tourist.
