Camping in the Great Barrier Reef January 2012

I am female, 29 year old and traveling solo from Sydney to Cairns in January 2012. During my trip, I would like to spend some days on an island (or different islands) in the Great Barrier Reef, snorkelling, swimming, and taking it easy. I think the best way to experience those islands is by camping… has someone here done this before and has some tips for nice islands? Also, since it is much more fun not to be out there alone, are there some outdoor enthusiasts who want to join me?

The Whitsundays is probably the best place to base yourself for camping on Islands, there are several tour operators who will shuttle you out by boat to an island with your gear and pick you up on an arranged date. Most of the islands there also have some good places for snorkelling off the beach. Another option you have in the Whitsundays is taking a boat tour, you get to cruise around the islands and sleep on the boat.

I have heard the Keppel Islands off Yeppoon is quite nice but I've never been there.

Near Cairns there are another couple of options:
Hinchinbrook Island which is pretty close to the mainland and snorkelling is not great. There is a hike that runs the length of the island and is quite pretty.
Fitzroy Island which is pretty close to Cairns, when I was there it was a great place to relax but there were rumours that camping was going to be closed on the island, not sure if that has happened.
Dunk Island which is closer to Mission Beach, the camping area is between the airfield and the resort and isn't very nice, it gets lots of day visitors too and snorkelling off the island is poor. On a plus side you can hire canoes and sailing boats from the resort which is a lot of fun and you can take outer reef tours from the resort jetty.
