hey all my friend applyed for a workin holiday visa and it was granted about 3 months ago but the other week he got into a fight and got arrested and is bein charged. hes really worryed about this. so im askin any1 who can help? when do they check to see if you have a criminal record and wud this stop him gettin into the country do they check when u enter the country or on the flights or which cheers.

Pretty much everyone has to complete an upon arrival into Australia, and on this I believe it asks about convictions.

Making a false declaration (which includes not mentioning anything) would likely be looked at more harshly than the declaration of a conviction. In my opinion it would be stupid not to declare any convictions when asked, as the consequences can be greater than you think.
This could include consequences later on in life, for example if a great career/job opportunity came his way, or a special someone from Australia (or New Zealand) enters his life and there's a potential move of country. Certainly, when I was here on a WHV, I didn't know a few years later I would meet my future wife (she's from Australia, I'm originally from the UK).
The above examples would result in a visa application requiring police checks.
right i fort that about the police check. but his visa has already been granted so they would of done there checks. do they then check the IPC against any data base upon arrive into the country
I have many friends travelling around Oz now with Criminal Records. One of a serious crime too. As long as your honest and give your reasons, what's the problem? He should be find if he just fills the form in. He could get away with it, but if hes caught, that looks far worse than being honest.
Australian Customs can be quite brutal, don't lie, whatever you do don't lie.
Not only will they no look kindly on it there is a chance that not only would your friend be turned back but probably barred from ever returning. It's not worth it.

My guess is its is probably irrelevant, but it is on the immigration card and they need to make that decision. If he declares the fact they will probably just ask some questions.
And he needs to be on his best behaviour while in Australia.
I would perhaps suggest even take an official statement from police etc. about the charge just in case. That way if they ask the details of the conviction they have all the information.
