I've been in Holland thrice and I've visited some places there so I can give you some advice!
Amsterdam is definitely the place not to be missed in Holland. The little town of Haarlem is just 15km away from Amsterdam and it is a nice place to visit as well.
Then you have Den Haag on the coast, but it isn't actually a place worth a visit in my opinion, cause besides the windy beach and the Royal family palace it has nothing else to offer for tourists.
Rotterdam is a very modern city and quite different from the rest of the cities in Holland. I've only spent one day there and it didn't seem to have a lot of things to do and see, but still I found the architecture interesting and I've met some really nice people there.
Another city I've been is Utrecht. This is a smaller city where you won't find anything special to do, but the people are very welcoming and friendly there too.
If you travel in Holland in April/May you can't miss the tulip flower fields! And a bike-trip from Amsterdam to Utrecht can be done in a day and offers some lovely landscapes too.
Do not expect Holland to be the best place in Europe for nightlife! Even in Amsterdam i've been quite disappointed. The coffeeshops close at 1 a.m. and there are some clubs open until 3 or 4 a.m. maximum. After this hour, either you are lucky to find a nice after-party where to go, or you just have to go home.
Unless you are into the psytrance scene! In Holland you can find some nice underground and open-air parties.
