Jakarta has some good places to see, but dont be surprised with the traffic+polution+slum area.
Go see :
- Monumen Nasional (Monas) in Central Jakarta
- Old Town (Kota tua) near the Jakarta Kota train station which also surrounded by some museums
- President palace near Gambir station (also there is one in a city called Bogor, take a train from Jakarta, it takes around 45 mins with $1.5 ticket each way (express one), i dont recommend you to take economy class train, just too dangerous. Unless you want something different)
there is a beach in Ancol, but don't expect a white sandy beach where you can do sunbathing hehe
If you want to see a nice sandy beach, you can go to thousands island, but its a bit expensive to go there, you need to take a boat to get there. Not sure tho how much (I never been there myself, you can do research online for more info) but maybe worth it.
If you are a real backpacker (on budget), go to Jalan Jaksa for cheap accomodation. Lots of backpackers there, they have some bars around that area too. For bars, you can go to Kemang, its the center of entertainment in Jakarta.
If this is your first time coming to Indonesia, try some Indo food like Soto Ayam, Bakso, Nasi pecel, Nasi Padang (you can find everywhere).

Wow, nice infos, I am going to visit Indonesia this summer. Just now I am gathering all the infos I can get. I think Jakarta 4 days and Bali 3 days, is it enough time?

So you have total 7 days in indo? can i suggest you something.. in my opinion spending time 2-3 days is enough in exploring Jakarta (depend on what ur interest in travelling) just like dms26's suggestion. additional of Monumen National , you can also visit National Museum (known as Musium Gajah) and its just close by Monument National. If you stay at Jalan Jaksa (budget accomodation) go eat at Abuba steak , its a cheap steak but tasty cost u about $5.
And if you go to Bali, its very worth it if you visit Lombok also(Jakarta 3 days , Bali 3 days and lombok 1 day),.. lombok is an island near Bali and its famous as an old Bali (because bali nowadays already too crowded.. in lombok you can see a very astonishing beaches in Gili Trawangan.. ) just google it first..
And.. dont forget to watch for ur belonging at public transport in esp Jakarta because pick pockets is common there.. dont worry Jakarta is fun but just watching for ur belonging well in Jakarta..
