Travel money cards, help please!!

Hey there i am heading out to the Gold Coast from the UK in the new year. I think i have things sorted from this side, all except how to transfer my money. I will b staying at least 5 months and was wondering whether i should put what money i have onto a travel money card such as the travelex or caxton fx. This would just be for first month until i get my Australian account and start earning a wage over there.

Have you a job there? If not then don't count on earning any money as you may not find work.

Take a fair bit of cash with you to allow for any problems.

I draw money from my account using my debit card when abroad, as I am doing now on my fourth of eleven months. Charges are per transaction so you draw maximum amount each time. If you do this, you should tell them where and when you are going so they will not question your card's use in Australia.

I quite liked the Gold Coast but was not impressed with Brisbane.

I was only looking into this the other day. As you say avoid debit cards at all costs. On money supermarket you can compare which pre-paid card suits you best, i just ordered the escape travel one as it was the only one with no charge on cash machine withdrawls or if you pay online or in a shops with it (i did have to pay a tenner for it though, most of the other cards are free).

Hope that helps

PS make sure you get a sterling card, as when you top up from your british bank you dont loose out on currency conversion.

Does anyone have any info on these cards such as how fees work. I have tried to read up on this but getting mixed messages. I've seen people say just to take uk visa debit but surely this will incur a lot of charges?

I have used the caxtonfx dollar card for the US before and i had no problems whatsoever and also no charges. It was perfect so looking for something along those lines for my visit to Australia. The Caxtonfx card i would need for Australia seems to have a charge but i'm not sure what this is for, ahhhhh im running out of time here! Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance

Like the first replier said, use your own card you use at home before you open a bank account here and draw your maximum each time to avoid high fees.

Come to Perth if you cant get work, its a beautiful city but be warned its now very expensive to live here but the weather is always good
