I have done a year in asia this area mostly, in 2010
So:
Only in Thailand you maybe asked for further travel tickets, but that's maybe I was asked when I was leaving to Laos that if i come back he would want to see a forward ticket
The only place in SE asia where you MUST prepare visa in advance is Vietnam
well and India. Everywhere else, guranteed you get it on spot, or no visa requred..I did that.
These places are so packed with backpakers.
1) you will never be alone, always meet new friends in hostels. backpackers society is always open minded and friednly.
2) mostly you decide on route on the way, since you meet new people, travel with them together for some time.
And transportation between these countries so easy, so convenient and frequent, you won't have problems at all. and cheap like hell. KL - southern thailand 8$ US.
So backpackers ghettoes are all in the same areas in each country, so you cannot miss your environment. One advice, make a insurance, I did not make it, cuz i was rough tough stupid young guy and i was lucky not to get a dongy fever, one english girl did, and her bill was 5000$ she had it covered, if you don't have insurance and you get it, then turn on the song "when i be older i will be stronger" and let it pass and concentrate on wisdom that you will get from suffering. It is that bad and there is no medicine for that, it is not curable, it can only pass. just google it what it does to your body. So I would advice insurance in that 1% case you get bitten by a mosq. and use preventive measures, not after, but before, like spray etc, I was bitten like by 40-50 mosquitos each night and i did not get sick, so chances are slim, but you know..
What else, it's a long topic those countries, in Vientam, don't trust friendly out of nowhere locals, they are super pro cons hollywood production, 5 star , so just don't trust.
If you are an adept of mary jaine, be careful in thailand, other countries are fine, but in thailand just behave Maybe get a indonesian visa for 3 month before you get to country, get in thailand from agency for extra 30$ without pain, in Malaysia it is a real damn pain to get one, 2 hours quuee, documents, another 2 hours, come back in 5 days, you don't want that. On spot in Indonesia you can get only 1 month visa, but 1 month for country with 17000 islands that is pathetic.
Not sure whether it will be a culture shock for you, like hmm, you know in UK you got lots of like china towns so it's the same, nothing outstanding, but India yes, 100% culture shock if you go there, other places are civilized in a way, no need to adapt, everything just fine.

I have 2 routes planned now, either...
Arrive in Hanoi and travel south through Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos into North Thailand head south into Bangkok and stay and chill around all the islands for a while, then head to Malaysia, Singapore, and finish in Indonesia before heading for Aus/NZ.
The other option was land in Bangkok, head North and basically go clockwise and finish back in Thailand. (I've heard this is a popular route but will the weather be good if I arrived in July/Aug time???)
Im hoping to leave in about 4 months so going to choose which ever route will be best for weather but at the moment I have no idea when the best time that will be.

I was spending no more than 10$ a day for food and lodging, excluding visas and transportation.
So 350$ US dollars for a month for food and lodging in that area, transport
between let's say Bangkok and Vientinae like 25-30$US
Visas 30-40-50$
I have a friend he still travells there for 2nd year now, he goes no more than 300euro a month
for everything.
As for transportation, if i were you, I would take a flight that is cheapest.
If you arrive to BKK then go north to see Chiang Mai, then bus to Laos's Vientiane,then to Luanprabang in laos then
Hanoi, then south to Ho chi minh, then west to cambodia and back to BKK.
If you land in Hanoi then you would go south to see Ho chi Minh, then west to cambodia
then back north again north to laos, it's like wasting 900KM each way south and back north, unles ofcourse you don't want to see Ho chi minh, you can go west from hanoi to Laos, then south all the way to Cambodia and west to BKK.

50$ for a flight from vietnam to indonesia, I really loved them :D And they serve all directions in that region,
I arrived to BKK in late August weather was hot, it should be a nice place to be there in July too, I think, I don't remember but i think that visa on spot for thailand is just for 2 weeks.
I got free visa in Malaysia for 3 month for thailand, and thailand is amazing, 30 degrees water, so many different island and beaches, you would want to get a prolonged stay.
So weather in snice in this period, the best route is really the one that does not make you go circles, so as i said above could be general sketch.
In Bkk there is nothing to do excpet getting visas and drinking till 7 am at khao sanh road, you should stay at the hostels behind the temple there, it's sound vague, but very defenite once you know where you are, great place to meet people. Actually, there are no hostels in that regions, only hotels, around 5$ for single person, in cambodia they have like hostel 50 cents for a hammackus but better to spend 3$ on a huge room
Where i stayed in Siam rep in cambodia, staff was selling mary jane it's a huge place, i don't really remember the name, something like green lodge..
Anyway it's hard to get lost, but one thing is true is that, there are good places to stay
and best place to stay, you know you want the best place, so you won't miss right vibe,
but people will advice you, they are just like you, and there are thousands of backpackers community around there. Enjoy mate! I'm already having nostalgia from writing this.

What time of year did you do this route? I've head that Thailand, Cambodia and Laos are wet season in July/Aug/Sept but North Vietnam is really nice. does this just mean a little bit of rain or full blown monsoons?
Is there anything you can recommend as a MUST do...

Nice sharing about travel planning. These are cheap and no more expensive as compare to other countries. I have not go more than 2 country. I visited Cambodia, Malaysia. These countries have great history and very cooperative people. My tour was consist of 2 months and i enjoyed very much.
