23 days in Taiwan Itinerary

I have around 23 days in Taiwan and I plan go along with this itinerary, is it feasible? Need some comments. Thanks in advance....

Day 19 in Taipei maybe?

Don't miss the science museum and the movie studios.

The central part of the town itself is worth a walk around. Actual street names do not always match up to streets on maps. Different Chinese people translating them into English.

Maybe even a trip out from the mainline railway station?

To reach 台東 by train all the paths lead to 枋寮. From 高雄 or 屏東 just go to 枋寮 and change to "south-link line" to reach 台東. Public transportation in big cities is alright but in 台東 you can spend a lot of time waiting for the bus, and last time I was there I didn´t saw many cabs around. If you have an international driving license, I would recommend you to rent a scooter.

One of my favorite spot near Taipei is Maokong/貓空。 You can reach it by first taking the MRT to reach the zoo and than take the cable car. The ride inside the cable car is 4 Kilometer long and the view simply amazing! While in August the climate in Taipei can be really unbearable, Maokong is much more cooler. The only downside are all the Mosquitos. Maokong is famous for all its tea houses. Personally I like to go there best when the sun is setting.

If you need more help just let me know. I´ve been there many times in Taiwan and I´m simply in love with the place! Most of my taiwanese friends tease me by saying that I know the country better than they do.

If you didn´t book any hotel/hostel yet, and don´t mind hostels I can warmly recommend "the cats Pajamas" in 台北 (near 師大夜市!)and "Cozy Planet" in 高雄。Both hostels have been refurnished last year when I was there and the staff, cleanness and price have been outstanding!

Hi Niels1301, thank you very much!!

I only have car license, can I still rent a scooter even though I've never rode one before?

Thanks for the recommendation on 猫空, cos I'm a tea lover

as for the order of going to Hualien>Taroko> 合欢山> yilan. Is there any way I can improve the order so I do not backtrack etc.? Or should I do 合欢山 from 台中?

Also, I have not booked my accommodations yet, it will be great if you can recommend some hostels that are preferably near to train stations/night market.
For 台中, it seems that tomato room is very popular, but it's quite a distance from the train stn, hence I'm hoping to look for an alternative if possible.

Actually you would officially require for an international driving license to rent vehicles in Taiwan. Although I also only have a car driving license, in the EU it also allows you to drive small scooters. It would probably not be a problem to rent one outside of 台北 because from my experience people tend to close their eyes on such details, but if you never drove a scooter before it might not be the best after all.
Another alternative would be to use cabs to reach more isolated places. Even though their are not so many on the streets you could still negotiate a deal. Last year when I went to see the Taroko gorges we had our own guide driving us in her Taxi during the whole day. It was really affordable. If my memory serves me well the 3 of us paid 800 NT$ each. The owner of my B&B in Hualien organized the tour. BTW her B&B was really nice too and is quite close to the train station. It is named Hualien11.

As for 合歡山 in my opinion it would be the best to depart from 花蓮 and not from 台東。

Tarako is amazingly beautiful. You´re really in for a treat! If you want feel free to take a look at my picture Gallery. I uploaded quite a few pictures from Taiwan there.

thank you so much Niels1303!!

You´re welcome.
