A fvourite of mine in London is to take the tube to Hammersmith, walk down to the Thames and follow it west, cross the brdige at Barnes Bridge train station, then follow the Thames back towards Hammersmith, crossing the Hammersmith Bridge and heading to the tube station.
You pass some excellent pubs, get a bit of exercise, see a beautiful part of London, and not spend a penny.
James's suggestion is a good one.
Alternatively, tube to Richmond and walk around the town, by the river and the park there, also very nice.
