Hey all, finally getting my ass in gear and landing in Bangkok in September.. I'm heading with another girl who is going to fly to Australia from Ho Chi Minh in November so that gives us two months to get there. After she's gone, I'm heading back to Thailand.

Hey all, finally getting my ass in gear and landing in Bangkok in September.. I'm heading with another girl who is going to fly to Australia from Ho Chi Minh in November so that gives us two months to get there. After she's gone, I'm heading back to Thailand.
What would be a good route to take? From looking at maps, it seems like it might be too big a journey to make it through Laos before heading over east and down Vietnam's coast.. At the same time, I really want to go tubing with her in Vang Vien.
At the moment, I'm thinking of going directly east through Cambodia and seeing some of the place properly for a month or so and then onto South Vietnam.. Since I'm going back to Thailand anyway, I will make it to Laos anyway at some point.So far I've heard of a few key places in Cambodia but what I'm looking for is more of a general direction to take.. An outline of how to make the most out of two months going from one city to the other.
Any advice welcome :D
Traveling by bus in the region is pretty easy. Its difficult to come up with a route as your post is a bit all over the place. Im not sure if you are heading down Vietnam on this trip with your friend, or what.
From bangkok its a really nice train ride up north to Chiang Mai over night, then you can make your way over to Laos and into northern Vietnam, then head down either by the train or bus, with stop offs in key areas. From Saigon a bus over into Cambodia for Ankor Watt then head back into Thailand. If you do some planning for sights you want to see you could make this route a really nice one in two months.

Hey, sorry if opening post was confusing.. Basically we have two months to travel between Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh.
You're idea of Chang Mai first and then over through Laos to Vietnam had crossed my mind but I was wondering if it would be too short a time to do the full trip back down to Ho Chi Minh?
My main concern is making sure the girl I'm travelling with has a good time because she is only there for two months.. After that I'm heading back towards Thailand and can take things at my own pace.
If going through Laos, would it be worth seeing Hanoi or would I be safer going directly to Ha Tinh maybe? Looking at a map here and trying to work out a route but it's tough..

You can definitely do the route I was talking about in 2 months. Obviously someone else can't plan your itinerary for you without spending a lot of time trying to find out how you like to travel, and what your interests are. You need to research all the places in Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand and decide what you want to see. Then map it out and figure out the best route. Then look at your transport options. Only tip I'll give you is, better to do too little than too much. But even that is my preference in travel and I know others that pack in what to me seems like too much work, but they seem to have a great time.
