Hello There..
Hi Lauren,
what will you mainly use your laptop for? Surfing the web, writing emails?
Personally when I travelling I try to travel as light as possible. And since you are planing on traveling the world, I guess you won´t miss carying a lot of weight around. So what about taking a netbook or tablett pc (like and ipad) with you? It gets a lot of the job done. If you want to upload pictures while traveling, make sure you get a device with a SD Card slot (or get an adapter for ipad) though.
Hi,
I think any laptops will do as long as the battery last long enough..
It just sucks when you keep charging it, right?
Having a cam with it is fine to for communication..
You can do skype video calls if you have one..
I think having a SD Card slot would be great too so that you can put on some picture files to your laptop...
Hope it helps..

I just completed a 1 year RTW trip with a Toshiba netbook NB505. I was super reliable and I still use it. Batterie last about 7 hours at full charge and you can find a new one at about 150-200$. Easy to do picture backups, write a blog offline, choose pictures, put music on your MP3, wifi, etc.
