Hi guys,
From Bangkok, Kanchanaburi is a really interesting day trip. Things to see there include the Bridge Over The River Kwai, the Jeath Museum, the Death Railway and the Military Cemetery. Some of these really leave a lasting impression on you.
In Bangkok itself the weekend Chatuchak market is massive if you like markets and you're there on a weekend. The Royal Palace is maybe worth a look, although I found it pricey to get inside, but the grounds are worth seeing. Khao San Road is the place where most backpackers base themselves as there are loads of hotels and guest houses. I actually prefer staying at the next street up (Soi Rambuttri) as it's a little quieter and cheaper, but still close to the action.
In Chiang Mai I would recommend doing a hilltribe trek. When I did it at the first village we did traditional dancing around the fire on the night-time and the second village was in the middle of nowhere and we took the locals on in a game of football which was fun.
If you do go on a trek try to book one which includes bamboo rafting as that's really cool as well, and nice and relaxing. The night market in Chiang Mai itself is also worth a visit.
Do Chiang Mai first as Bangkok is one big shopping centre and if you buy stuff you don't want to drag it around Thailand with you.
Do check out MBK as well as Silom/PatPong night market. Pantip Plaza for computers and electronic stuff.
Grand Palace (don't believe any scam merchant who tells you it's closed). Vimanmek Mansion close to the zoo.
Chinatown day time markets.
Since you have so little time, I would take a morning AirAsia flight to Chiang Mai and come back the following evening.
Note: AA are moving to Don Mueang (the old airport) as of October 1st.
