Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore - 30/7 till end of august!

So I finally took the plunge and i'm flying to Bangkok on 30th July and hoping to travel to malaysia/singapore and maybe Loas. I'm going alone and want to see as much as possible. If anyone's going to be in the same places at the same time let me know as i'd love to meet like-minded people. I just finished uni and bricking it a bit but very excited!

In Bangkok, ask around on KSR. Lots of travellers there.

Take a small telescopic umbrella. It's rainy season all around Asia, and when it does rain it can pour down very heavy.

That's not what he asked is it!? What sort of advise is "ask around on KSR"!!? And WTF would he need to take a friken umbrella for? You can buy them for about a dollar on every street corner. Why on earth would you bother packing one! Most of the time it may be raining but its warm and you just walk in the rain like everyone else and dry off in 30 seconds when it stops.

I agree, I am very jealous and hope you have a lovely time. This is something I aspire to do in a few years when I've got some savings behind me before I start a family and am tied down. I hope you have an awesome time I really do, perhaps let us know how you got on? I'm very intrigued by the idea x

Dodger. No advice, just criticism. What sort of advice is that? There is no need for profanity, even if you can say nothing worth listening to.

KSR is where the back packers are and fellow travellers. Chat with them at any eating place and you'll probably find some people going to those destinations.

Umbrellas on every street corner? What section of Bangkok would that be? The umbrella on every street corner section?

A dollar? In your dreams.

I have seen rain in Bangkok many times over the decades and even with an umbrella I would not like to be out in it as it is often prolonged and very heavy, when an hour's rain can produce flooding. This even in the Dec to Mar section when it is supposed to be dry.

Possibly you are thinking of the 3pm shower in Singapore?

Those umbrellas can be found for example at one of the gazillion 7-11s, though iirc they might have been as much as $2 there. My personal experience the first time I showed up in Bangkok matched what Dodger described though. I had just got off the skytrain into the city after leaving my hostel to explore, it started raining, and I had an umbrella a minute later. (Though was indeed dry swiftly, too; in early August.) The umbrella lasted me two years and a bit, too, until it got blown to smithereens in the Cuillin Hills.

Matt: To find likeminded travellers here, also try asking on the travel companions forum. Besides that, a bit of advice which took me a few days to work out when I first arrived: crossing Bangkok swiftly (and thus being able to see a lot) can be somewhat tricky. When going from west to east (or vice versa), getting to the river is your best bet (even if it seems out of the way at first), as the boats are a great way to cross the distance until you can connect with the skytrain, and that time of the year you'll be especially pleased with the breeze they pick up. Within Thailand, I can highly recommend Chiang Mai, and if you're looking for something not quite as many travellers do, look into Phanom Rung (think Angkor Wat lite). (From Bangkok take a bus to Nang Rong; trains suck, and provide zero visiblity due to dirty windows.)

Thank you for the advice. I don't think I'll bother with the umbrella, buy one there if it's essential :D

Any more tips? Keep them coming!

@katiew I expect to write up my travel log so I'll let ya know!

I've never seen them in 7-Elevens in Bangkok as they normally sell just food, drinks, some toiletries, simple medicines and such, but will check them out when in Thailand at the end of the year.

if u come to malaysia, let me know. especially penang island.
