So, have been here almost 2 weeks (out of 8) and literally have only encountered Russians (other than the Vietnamese, obviously!) We've been to Phu Quoc islands and Mui Ne so far. Mui Ne has been taken over by Russians! The shop fronts are all written in Russian, quite shocked! Anyway, what I'm wondering is, does anyone have any tips on how to meet any other English speaking travellers that want to mingle? We certainly have no issues with different cultures but had hoped to meet other people and from experience, these Russians like they're own company! Currently in Mui Ne and moving onto Nha Trang after (which I've read is much the same in terms of Russian tourists as they fly directly into Nha Trang from Russia), any western/backpacker bar recommendations most welcomed! Or, better yet, anyone around?
Blimey, I spent a month or so travelling around Vietnam at the back end of 2009 and can’t recall encountering a single Russian – it must have changed a bit!
In Nha Trang we generally headed to the Red Apple Bar and then out to the Sailing Club.
Out of interested is there a pub/bar/restaurant called Sizzlers in Mui Ne still? We got there after three months of eating rice and noodles, etc and were desperate for a little Western food. It was run by an English guy called Craig and served the most amazing cooked breakfasts, homemade pizzas and burgers and proper chips!
Well, came across a tad more of a mixture in Phu Quoc but still mostly Russians and Mui Ne, well, the shops fronts are all in Russian, the bars/music is geared 95% towards them, ya, not what I was expecting and have read reviews Nha Trang is the same! Haven't come across Sizzlers yet, where would you describe it being? We're coming in a taxi from Phan Thiet end. Any big hotels you remember it being near? I travelled Thailand in 06, SO many people commented on how much they favoured Vietnam, I'm sad to say, I haven't yet found the same appeal... Mui Ne has shocked me big time!
I loved Vietnam! Sizzlers is on the main road that runs adjacent with the coast, it is on the right if the coast is on your left. Only place I remember it being near is Pogo Beach Bar.
Once you get up to Hoi An/Danang, I doubt that you'll see many Russians. Try going inland via the Central Highlands (Dalat and BMT). I think the north has more to offer - just my opinion. Don't miss Sapa!
Ha yeah I remember Mui Ne, I was lucky enough to meet some people from Canada/Scandinavia on the bus on the way there and as you say the Russians didn't speak to us at all! It was the only place in Vietnam I experienced that tho loved the rest!
Sounds like OP frequents low life bars of the type that Russians love.
