Hi,
It is quite difficult to travel around South America on public transport so you can spend huge amounts of time on buses (rarely trains) and have to make a number of connections with long times between them to get anywhere. What you have to remember here is that often you will not be travelling about a country but from one country to another which is where the problems start
Planes are a lot better, but not cheap and best booked early as possible. If travelling from one side to the other, then between Santiago and Buenos Aires which is a relatively short distance so will be cheaper.
The biggest problem in South (and Central) America is petty theft. Watch your money and valuables at all times.
Do check on the weather in these countries for when to go.
I'm doing the same thing from Jan but I'm travelling into Columbia from Los Angeles, found a flight from £140.
Have looked at other flights in and around South America but they are pretty costly and I'm on a budget so thinking buses might be my best bet.
Here is a not bad link that I've found quite useful.
