Anyone traveled to HAITI recently?

Hello all,
I am wondering if anyone has traveled to/through Haiti recently? And if so, can you shed some light on whether it is travel friendly, are accommodations readily available, etc?
I really want to travel Haiti for a few weeks over Xmas and New Years, i have heard it is very rich in culture and beautiful! but I hope to hear that it is also friendly and relatively safe!
Thanks!

Haiti is a political mess and the 2010 earthquake is still an ongoing disaster but the people are fabulous and it definitely has a vibe all its own. I like the place a lot, but it wouldn't be my first recommendation for a traveller who doesn't have experience in poor, developing countries. Same as in many cities throughout the Caribbean and Mexico/Central/South America there are areas in Port-au-Prince that you as a tourist have absolutely no business visiting, it's too dangerous.

Do your research and be honest regarding your limits/knowledge as a traveller and it could be a very interesting trip. Otherwise, if you're interested in poor, developing countries there are much, much easier destinations in that neighbourhood, Cuba being the most obvious choice.

Cheers,
Terry

You might want to post this in the North America forum to see if you get any replies, as Haiti is part of North America, not part of either Central or South America

see #6 on the list above

To the OP, the thread has been moved to the appropriate forum for you.

There are hotels that are avail. in Jacmel - you can try the Florita for a start. It is not a resort, but if that is the direction you wish to go try the Cap Lamandou or further out of town at the Cyvadier Plage. All-inclusives are not typical in Haiti. Please do some reading about the area...

You can try to rent a car in PaP, fly into Jacmel, or simply take the bus.

Just ask around in Jacmel for places to go - Basin Blue, Parc National la Viste, or random moto rides will do nicely - moto services are found on every street in Jacmel.

It is not in the least insensitive - people need to make a living and tourism is one way to do this.
