wonder how possible it is, cause i have to be at melbourne to house-sit for my friend's a little, and then i got a flight to catch in Perth.
Flights are insanely expensive during the first week of Jan so I figured maybe I can just drive up and enjoy the view as well.
I remember meeting up with a couple in Albany who did that drive. Don't remember much of what they told me, but mostly I think they said it was a whole lot of nothing in between (between Port Augusta and Esperance).
Distance-wise it should be possible to do this drive. Do make certain you have a plan for what to do if the car breaks down at the worst possible moment and it'll be a day or two before the next passing car comes along. At the very least carry loads and loads of water (chances are it's going to be way hot that time of the year). And if that's a rental car, then better be certain that one way fees aren't going to be even worse than flight costs.
There's loads of interesting things to see and do between Melbourne and Adelaide (the Great Ocean Road, the Grampians, and my unsuspected favorite, Port Elliot, to name just a few) and south of Perth (Cape Leeuwin and around is awesome - though not on the shortest route to Perth) - most of which you won't have time for, so it's worth to do some research beforehand and pick just a couple of must-do stops.

i figure if the car breaks down by the road side, im just gonna sit by the roadside and cry till someone stops to help me, which can well by 2 hours later or something. (im kidding). but surely this is one thing that i dread. heard that some companies do offer roadside assistance (or whatever they call it), so that should make things easier?
i will probably be keeping my fingers crossed for one of those transfer cars, so it will be cheaper (or even free) to drive them. one way fees are shits

I was going to suggest trying a relocation company. Can't join you I'm afraid but I think used one earlier this year, I just can't remember which one...
Flights are expensive because of the distance involved, about 1700 miles, and because of the New Year.
I looked at tigerair.
First week, 7th is cheapest at Aus$220 (all inclusive price).
If you can go a few days later, flying 10 Jan, one way is Aus$150 or A$135 for late night flight.
