There are many, many insurance companies online. Even Tesco does them. It is a matter of comparing prices and comparing benefits till you find what you want.
Generally insurance policies are for up to one year then you have to renew them.
Remember, you MUST tell them if you plan to do anything remotely dangerous like bungee jumping and such. Also if you have any medical conditions. While they normally pay out when needed, if you leave them a loophole, as in omitting to mention something on the form, they will not pay out.
Australia is EXPENSIVE, If you are thinking of working there, make sure you get a work visa (some who don't are put on the next plane home at immigration) and be aware that it may take you some time to get a job, so take plenty of money. You can apply for work before leaving at online Australian work agencies, etc.
