I'm taking the plunge and I'm planning to go travelling alone. I'm heading off in July 2014, so it's a little while off at the moment.
I'm fine in my own company and make friends really easily, I can talk to anyone about anything!
I'm finding planning a little daunting, I don't know where to start! I have an idea of a route, Thailand (North), Laos, Cambodia, maybe Philippines, Australia, Thailand (South) and India. In that order.
I'm finding visa and work permit (I want to volunteer) info confusing and unclear. I guess I'm looking for any hints and tips on a) planning and b) getting the most out of the trip.
I think I'll probably look to travel for 6 months, but hey, who knows what might happen!

Maybe you can start from India, and then Laos, Cambodia (You can use bus from Cambodia to Thai), Thailand, Malaysia (Churchtown, you can use train from Thai), Singapore (you can use boat from Malay), and then you can go to Indonesia (Perhaps, and i can help you here). In July my teammates would climb Mt. Rinjani in Lombok, so you can enjoy Gili Trawangan beach or maybe you can join us.
From Lombok, you can enjoy Bali or maybe fly to Australia.

Returning home to the UK or remaining in Australia?
Start with passport which has 6 months or more remaining from last country. . Research visa requirements. Work up a budget so you know how much money you have available per day. If you find that you have to stay in cheap crappy places consider fewer countries and shorter amount of time on holiday.

Can't speak for Australia but many of the Asian countries don't want foreigners taking jobs away from their citizens! Work permits are hard to get. For example, in Thailand, most foreigners to get a job you have to have a skill that cannot be filled by a Thai. Thais work 10 or 12 hours a day for around 200-300 baht a day. A wage of 300 baht is about $10 US. Working illegally in some countries could cause you to be arrested. Even unpaid volunteer work may require a work permit too. Find the expat forums for each country ask about work permits. Similar to link below.
My advice. Shorter visit so you have more available money. Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam can be done by overland travel. Maybe skip India and the Philippines for another time. It appears that you might be using a whole bunch of one way flights. Some one way flights cost almost the same as round trip on full service airlines. Round trip to Bangkok. Round trip to Australia from Bangkok and back might save money. Use the second half of your UK to Bangkok for the ride home. Do the math on your flights and maybe save money. (Transportation between Thailand and nearby countries is not that expensive.)
Check the weather for each country. You have time to work things out before your departure. Australia will be the most expensive country.

I agree with you the plan strarting with India would be good then leave to Uk via Tips of the last in south and south east asia.
Though the plan of journey is good but working would be a bad idea as most of the people get voluntary work permit but it hard in some south east asian country where the jobs are less. I think In India its ok to have while other country have restrictions.

How come everyone thinks starting in India would be best? I know looking at a map, it makes sense to start there and east, bit I've heard that India can be really daunting and it worries me to go there alone. Which is why I thought of maybe doing it last, before I head home.
@karazyal I don't plan to stay in Aus, I have friends there that I want to visit. My intention is to come home after.
I wouldn't be after paid work, I'm really keen to volunteer. I'd like to offer help in English speaking school and orphanages, I've been looking on helpex for possible options. Thanks for the hint on the expat forums
You could be right about the flight situation, I totally understand that it's easy to get about Thailand, Cambodia and Laos across land, which will save money.. Philippines is only an idea at this stage, but, India really interests me. Cost will be a major factor...

Any country could be daunting/haunting types if you don't undertake precautions which are required. Its best to experience it by yourself rather than going by what you have heard. Coz every 1 has their own perception. I would say start from where ever you want but don't generalise about the country on the basis of what you have heard from others.
As per the time you're starting your journey in the month of July, and this would be the time when Monsoon hits India and it becomes more scenic and the option to visit places get increased. You can visit the sanctuaries, National parks, back waters and other places.
