I planning to go Kuala Lumpur at end of this year for 4 days 3 nights.
We tend to stay at the MY Sentral, a very short walk away from Sentral Station. A double room is around MYR 100, it's close to many cafes and restaurants, transport to other parts of the city is easy and it's easy to get to and from the airport (air con coaches MYR 8).
Depends what you are after, what you are comfortable with, and what you want to do.
Most of the backpacker community stay in either Chinatown or Bukit Bintang where the shops are. Both have some great street food. They are pretty close and you can walk from one area to the other in about 30 mins.
If you want to meet people, and party a bit, and don't mind dorms, although they have private rooms too. The Reggie house 1 in Chinatown is a good option. The dorm room goes for about 15myr. The woman, (Helen) that use to run it, moved to a place round the corner called the Lok Anne. I don't know why, but I love this place. Its a bit rundown, but it has such amazing character. Plus the staff are fantastic and go out of their way to help. They have a car to take you to the airport for a better price than a taxi and better price than a bus if you are sharing. Bukit Bingtang has a bunch of cheap accommodations. I'd probably take a look on Tripadvisor to see how they rate.
I think no doubt the most popular area to stay when you’re visiting Kuala Lumpur is Bukit Bintang – a locale closest to some of KL’s better bars and nightlife. However you must be sure to consider staying in the KLCC area – these busy grids of streets is what KL is all about and you’ll be within walking distance to some of the city’s best retail venues and dining outlets.

Sunshine Bedz is not bad. Patrick (i think whom is the owner) is really knowledgeable about the area and fun to chat with.
hotel wise you can look at Time Square or Melia?
I'd strongly suggest you to stay near to Bukit Bintang or KLCC vicinity. There are plenty of hotels to choose from, you can try Dorsett Regency, situated just next to Bukit Bintang Street, or the Radius International, a little bit further up but just walking distance to almost all the shopping complexes like The Pavilion, Berjaya Times Square and more.
We have been to KL several times and all except our first trip we have stayed in the Bukit Bintang area.BB is known as the golden triangle as it has lots to do,good eating and plenty of places to get a nice cold frothy.There is a monorail located there so to travel further afield is easy.BB is where you will find most other travelers so unless you had a reason why you had to stay in another area I would stick to Bukit Bintang.There are lots of Hotel options and you will be happy with what you can get for your budget.In BB there are the two most fabulous food courts at Lot 10 and The Pavilion Shopping centres.Unlike anything we have in OZ,food is cooked fresh to order,for around $4 a dish.Great food and great people watching.You will love KL.

The most popular area in Kuala Lumpur is Bukit Bintang. There are number of hotel as well as great street food, Dorsett Regency also good area situated just next to Bukit Bintang Street. To meet people, and party a bit ,The Reggie house 1 in Chinatown is a good option. Have Great Time.
