Moving to America alone for a year

Hey, I am considering moving to New York in October for a year to work and was hoping to get some advice about it. I will be going over alone and don't know anybody there which is a little daunting. I was hoping to get some advice from some people who have maybe already done something similar or who are in the same position as myself.

How are you swinging a Work Visa?

Good luck.

Cheers,
Terry

Your question is just a little vague, tell us more about yourself, so we can respond intelligently! Specifically, what is your field, and how sophisticated are you?

Hi Kiwibubs

I moved to Manhattan in 2008 by myself and stayed for 3 years. Ask away!

evelyn

How on earth are you going to get a visa for a year in the USA?
Are you either a genius or a famous person? ?

Seriously though, I did the whole fiancé visa thing 5 years ago but through going through the process never made it (my fiancé called things off the day before I was due to move)

Terry I graduated from college last October, I will be travelling on an Internship Visa for 1 year.

Daawgon I am in Media, mainly television and film production. I have been working in Ireland as a Production Assistant/Runner since I graduated college so I can build up my experience and be more likely to find a paid internship.

Thank you Evelyn thats really kind of you.

Thanks for the explanation, kiwibubs. The J-1 Visa is a great option for you.

I work in the film industry too and just a warning... the US runs a fairly closed shop. It was much, much easier to break in several years ago, but since their economy went down the toilet they (naturally) started to aggressively protect positions in the film industry, especially on the west coast.

Have fun and good luck.

Cheers,
Terry
