Roadtrip around USA

Hey,

Hi .. I suggest you do some serious research into the weather you might expect along your route. Could be some harsh weather at that time of year.

& you might want to brush up on your sense of direction .. knowing east from west will be crucial as some road signs use those directions ..

Happy travels

Steve

Okay, obviously this is why I am asking for some advice?

Instead of being critical, it would have been nice for some help instead.

I haven't been to America before, otherwise I wouldn't have posted this.

And clearly I accidentally stuffed up! SORRY!

RUDE!

Hey,

I am Australian and my partner and I plan to road trip America Christmas time 2017 for about 7 weeks.

We are planning to fly into Montreal and then come down along the EAST coast from there. Would like to also go to Chicago and then fly to Las Vegas and Road tripping up the WEST Coast, finishing up in Portland. Flying from Portland to Hawaii and then back to Australia. Any destinations we should stop at or advice, or if we should change the route would be extremely helpful.

I have mapped out where we would like to go, but still unsure of what routes to take and where to stop and what to see etc!

Still over a year away!

Thanks for any help you may be able to provide

Apologies! I stuffed up in the first part of the post!!

I thought Steve's reply was helpful. The key bit was the weather warning; could be a snowy difficult drive in places, and a lot of attractions close from September (depending what you plan to see and do).

I don't think hasbeen was being critical, more humorously pointing out that you were a bit muddled with your directions.

As for what sights to see, you might need to give more information on what you do and don't like to do. Do you fancy a bit of hiking in the national parks? Do you prefer exploring cities or the countryside? Are you going to self-drive? Do you fancy a baseball game or an American Football game? From Montreal, how far down the east coast do you intend travelling; Boston, New York, Philly, Washington, further? How long down the east? How long in Chicago? How long up the west? How long in Hawaii? Which islands? Seven weeks seems a short amount of time to fit all this in.

There are some great National Parks near Las Vegas (Grand Canyon, Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Zion, Capitol Reef, Death Valley and on to Yosemite on the way to San Francisco) and this area could easily take three or four weeks or more to explore.

Maui and Kauai are worth exploring in Hawaii and the Big Island has a volcano that might still be flowing or you might prefer the beach at Waikiki on Oahu - again, if you want to explore all these island two or three weeks might almost be sufficient.

As you say, you have plenty of time before Christmas 2017. Go down to your local travel agent and get some brochures on USA and look at the trips and tours which are organised in them; they'll give you a small idea of some of the sights worth visiting. Research some of these places either on TP or some other websites (Trip Advisor?) and you should be able to get a better idea of exactly what your route's going to be and how long you expect to be in each part and then you'll be able to ask for more specific ideas.

Enjoy your planning!

Thanks for your reply with all the information. We aren't sure on time frames yet. My cousin recently just travelled the world and done this exact road trip in reverse for approx. 6-7weeks. She is going to give me some more advice on time to spend at each place. We don't plan to spend weeks on end exploring...we would like to see snippets of many different parts of America then from there if we wanted to come back we would and spend more time in places we loved.

As far down..looking at Miami..possibly to the new Orleans. We may take Chicago out depending on how much time we are going to have (we are only young, plenty of time to come back). Will only be in Hawaii for appox 5-7 days. Flights are cheap from Aus to Hawaii, so can return at any time.

As for National parks, we would look into it, pick out a couple, but thankyou for the list, that is helpful to know what I should research!

Thanks for your advice! I will go and find out some more information and see how I go.

Would it be better to travel November/December from east coast to west coast or will this not make much of a difference at all?

Hi there!
Well From Las Vegas, you have stop at the Gran Canyon National Park, it's really a magic and amazing place. My husband was there in January and during the day was good and at night was freezing, so keep in mind that if you like to camp or to sleep in a tent could be hard but anyway there are a lot of motels so you can easily find a better way to rest.

By car you can reach the death valley and the Sequoia National Park...and then go to Frisco.

Do you want to rent a car from Montreal? Or are you planning to do by bus?
This point makes the difference!
Anyway Goog luck, this trip is really amazing :-)

Thinking of leaving out Montreal now, we were going to spend Christmas there, but it looks like we will be spending Christmas on the West Coast.

Thinking of starting in Boston Mid Novemeber...finishing in Hawaii For new years eve.
