Are you leaving Ireland with a one way plane ticket? (Since you have an indefinite return date.) If a one way flight compare the price you have with round trip to Thailand. Also if you had planned on entering Thailand using the free Visa Exemption stamp you get at the airport this requires a flight out of Thailand within 30 days. A Tourist Visa you can get ahead of time is good for 60 days. Visit or check with the Thai Embassy for details. With a one way flight the Proof of Onward Travel may or may not enforced at the airport at home.
January is still high season for hotel prices and bookings but not as bad as the Christmas and New Years holiday period. If you ever ask for hotel help include a price range in Thai baht.

You will not be alone in Thailand! Tourists show up every single day of the year! You will meet some people on tours, in your hotel or hostel, just walking around and in bars and pubs. You can have a nice time all by yourself too! If you are on a tight budget Bangkok is cheaper than many popular beach areas down south. (Cheap city transportation.)
TravBuddy forum has a section for tourists looking for people to travel with. You will receive posts or messages from guys who see a woman traveling alone as easy pickings and will welcome their advances! ALWAYS meet any potential travel mates in a neutral location like a mall or McDonalds and not disclose your hotel and room number for safety! You need a safe location to weed out the weirdos and perverts.
Take the time to do a forum search of this forum and even a Google search for "solo woman traveler" or words like that. Research how to handle money. (DO NOT rely on a single credit or debit card! You can lose a card or even have it stole by someone you meet on the road. Always have a back up source of spending money.) Google up scams to avoid. Know that Thailand is pretty big and some places will be a long ride on a bus or train or a short ride by flying. Know how to get from airport to hotel. (In Bangkok, from Suvarnabhumi Airport, during the daytime and up to midnight there is cheap rail service to the city area. There are some hotels you can walk to from Skytrain, subway or Rail Link stations. But rail service does not go everywhere in the city!)
Borrow a travel guide from a library or buy one from a book store.

Hi Jen, I am currently putting some plans together for travelling next year, I am thinking Thailand beginning of the year too! but haven't got anything booked as yet. are you going solo?
