Hey there,
I'm in Sydney on the 11th of Feb too, on my own. Will stay for nearly a week in Sydney and later go up the east coast try to find some nice work... if u wanna join or meet at least somewhere, send me a message...
cheers Elisa
hey tokenbloke just thought id answer a few of your questions. i came over on the 1st November 2009 to Sydney and im loving it over here so far. Just book yourself into one of the main hostels, its pretty cheap and you will easily meet people. just try and book into a mixed dorm of around 6-8 people.
the thing is with travellers is that we are all in the same position so we are a pretty friendly bunch. i was nervous as hell before i came out but honestly dont worry its really relaxed here and you should easily meet people. as for keeping in touch, obviously facebook is the best way, but you can get cheap phonecards over here for $10 which allows international calls. Also if you pick up a Vodaphone sim card for 29$ it gives you $150 free each time you top up so thats another handy way of keeping in touch with people.
If you guys need any more help just let me know im in Sydney until March then heading to Melbourne so id be happy to give you advice etc.

hey there.... im in sydney now but heading down to melbourne for three months in a few weeks! wpuld be happy to meet up if you'll be on that area? SG
Hiya,
I think you will find that lots of local people are friendly as well, but booking into a backpackers is a good place to start as there will be friendly people there who can help with advice as they are also travelling.
A word of advice ... get out and explore and dont just do the "main" backpacker kinda stuff.
Australia is a pretty safe place to be so aside from a little common sense ... relax and enjoy yourself.
