I spent about $1K USD during my month in VN. Stayed mostly in fan rooms, but upgraded to a/c rooms in Nha Trang, Mui Ne and HCMC. I would 'eat street' or in low end restaurants. Used the open tour bus system and took many tours. $2K AUD should be plenty for your month in VN.

You will really have trouble spending 2k in Vietnam. I travel solo and spend USD50. a day on average. The inexpensive hotels and guesthouses are quite nice and much more personal than the big fancy hotels. Actually, I often spend more on restaurants than my rooms. If you're traveling this summer, I would imagine prices to be quite low. I'll be back in Nov myself (first time in high season), but expect those $20. rooms to be priced about $25. at that time.
