I'm looking at Newcastle for my junior year abroad. I don't really know that much about it besides it's about the size city I'm looking for. Not too big like London or Brum but big enough where there is still stuff to do. What's the nightlife like? Sports? Concerts? Crime? I know it's really far north so I'm assuming the weather is rough and Scottish like.
It's a great place - I used to lecture at the University of Newcastle. The university is on the rise (in terms of teaching, research and public opinion), as is the city. The quayside area, incorporating the Baltic arts centre, Sage music centre and other public buildings, is always buzzing, as is the nightlife (so my students would tell me). For a large UK city it is relatively safe - for sports you have a wide range, including Newcastle United (known as the "Toon") and Sunderland and Middlesborough are a short train ride away.
Weather tends to be cold and drier in winter than the UK average - it can get a bit chilly when you have an east wind coming straight from Russia! However, that doesn't stop the lads and lassies from going out in their best (and sometimes skimpiest) clothing!
As a totally biased opinion [I'm from and still live in Newcastle] it's a great place to live.
Generally really friendly and with tons to do.
Crime can sometimes be an issue but usually a bit of common sense and you'll be fine.
Decent nightlife and a city totally geared up for students.
You'll have a great time.

Oh and Birmingham doesn't have an accent ? ?
Opinions are entitled to be made, but the 'It's not nice' comment is so far from the truth.
Newcastle night life ?.. Anongst the best in Europe (East and West). It's right up there with Sheffield, Belgrade and Amsterdam.
why study in england,? glasgow or edinburgh have fantastic unis and great nightlife and plenty of things to do.
I am a 3rd year from the US currently studying in Leeds, England. So far, it has been an absolute amazing time. Compared to the US, the English nightlife is out of control. If you like to party, go to Uni in England - they know how to do it.
Good luck.
Newcastle is an interesting and generally friendly city with good partying opportunities. I think it's a good choice.
