I wish someone had answered this question as I am looking to do the same as you N1U9F8C7.
Me and my mate are looking to rent a campervan either in OZ or NZ but have little experience.
Please, please reply to this if you have rented before etc....
Like most questions on a travel forum this one is also very subjective.
Are you good at negotiating a good price, both in buying and then selling?
Can you tell a clunker from a gem in the dirt? You can take it to be looked at by a garage, but then whats your comfort level in trusting them.?
Can you fix anything?
Will you have the time to sell? Or even to buy, it could take a couple of weeks to find a vehicle that suits, negotiate a deal and do the paperwork.
The time of year you arrive will make a difference too, not only for a cheaper rate on rental, but whether its a good time to buy and a good time to sell. In high season rentals are at a premo price, so are sales, but its a great time to sell. In low season, conversely there are great deals on rentals, its a great time to buy, but a bad time to sell.
Buying from another traveler can be a great option. They often come with all the equipment, bedding, pots, pans etc.
Do your research on vehicles. Some are better on gas than others. Bad gas consumption can add up considerably over a period if you plan on driving a lot. So will the wear and tear on your vehicle. Plan a budget that will allow for maintenance and repairs.
Consider a station wagon too. They are much cheaper than a van, and much cheaper on gas too. Buy a cheap tent and some camping gear and off you go.
Insurance can be arranged easily, and you can get roadside coverage too with
You can start researching vehicle prices now, with a number of websites that have vehicles for sale. Try and in NZ
