Confiscated passport

My husband left here (USA) to Nigeria to check into his inheritance that was his grandfather's. I thank goodness didnt go with him because of my job. He arrived there in January and spoke to a lawyer there in what he needed to do in order to check into it. He was told the inheritance has been there unclaimed for 20 years + and that he will have to go thru a court process and pay 20,000 to try to get the inheritance back from the government. He of course freaked out and in the process of things, they confiscated his US Passport and said that because he STARTED the process of inquiring about it that he cant leave the country. What do we do from here? Can they keep his passport from him even though he is not a Nigerian citizen. ( This truly is my husband and not some scam person who contacted me with this issue) Can someone tell me what to do? He wants to come home. Thank you, Texas66

Get in contact with the US embassy in Nigeria and the Nigerian embassy in the USA ASAP and raise hell with both of them.

Bit odd contacting a travel site about an inheritance and a confiscated passport.
