I was wondering if I could get some opinions on items you found yourself wishing you had brought or not brought on your first European adventure. I am planning on leaving in about a year or so and have ample time to put together/add to my list of items. I am a newbie and haven't done any "ground zero traveling" (as I call it), meaning just the minimum for a 1 year tour.
There's no real consensus about most things, though there is a general agreement that smaller bags are best (around 45litres), but you do have the time to make one or two shorter trips nearer home to sort things out - which is the only way I suspect.
Yeah do some trial runs to see what you find yourself wanting. I would say go as light as you can and pack as little as possible for convience but in Europe everything is so pricey that it would probably be better to be prepared.
Just start writing a check list.. work on it all the time and by the time you are ready to go you'll have it narrowed down (yet some how you will still forget the most important item, hahaha).

Nope...Disagree...Always bring a compass...Always bring a mirror.....Always bring a corkscrew(it has other uses.) Unless you are SPECIFICALLY camping...don't bring a sleeping bag. Don't bring a big coat, even if you are going to a somewhat cool clime....Figure out how to layer instead.

I take the usual stuffs that I bring whenever I'm in the country. except for I buy extra extensions and converters for those electronic as there are some places where they have different plugs and sockets.
@ piecar: thats kind of more like what I'm getting at, sorry to the rest I should have been a bit more clear... Things lie a compass or a watch with an altimeter just as examples... I have my bag, computer and camera picked out... but was trying to get a feel for other things. Nalgene bottle or not? more 2 pairs of shoes? these are the things I feel unclear about.
No more than two pairs of shoes...They take up ALOT of space.
i have done a eurotrip before, and didnt have allot of money and found myself wishing i had brought more warm clothes or good warm clothes You never know what might happen in winter time and you may have to sleep outside ( talking bout my experience ) !! and make sure your wallet is pretty safe
Don't take anything you can't stand to loose/break/have stolen.
Don't leave without your credit card, notebook (for documenting your adventures) and some earplugs.
