Kiwi Experience September 2010

Hi, i've booked the Kiwi Experience bus The Zephyr for the month of september, is anyone else doing this around that time? has anyone done this before and got any tips? and also, how easy is it to arrive in each place you stop at and get cheap hostels?
any info appreciated
thanks

The kiwi experience will push you to book through them (they pass around a signup form in the bus each day), with the entire group staying in the same hostel (which they undoubtedly get a kickback for).
September is low season though, so any hostel should have availability, and various hostels will run promotions like "stay 2 nights, get the 3rd night free", so it pays to do your own research.

ha ha hi again, yes we are! yes we booked ours through STA in february and got a deal about £330 I think.
thanks for the info sander thats much as I though it would be to be honest they are bound to have commission and certain hostels they try and get you to book into etc, was just worried they might stop off in places where you had no choice but to go with their suggestions and whether they woould be greatly overpriced?
we've budgeted about £420-£440 for accomodation for a month in NZ so about £14 a night is that about right for a dorm shared bathroom etc?

They have two overnight destinations where there's only one choice of accommodation and that exclusive for the Kiwi Experience: River Valley on the North Island, and Lake Mahinapua on the west coast of the South Island. I just checked, and your route takes you past both. I don't think they're horrendously overpriced though, or at least, I've never seen anyone complain about it.

Yes, that should be more than enough. In bigger cities you might pay around NZD $28/night (almost that £14 you mention), but in smaller towns a dorm might be as cheap as $22/night (e.g. £11).

I'm also doing the Kiwi Experience on the Zephyr but mines from the 6th of July til the August the 5th, any advice needed? Cheers in advance
