Melbourne for Christmas...where to stay, what to do??

Hey party people,

Hello Emma,

I'll be happy to provide you with as much travel advice about Melbourne as possible. I've lived here for 15 years, and I've done all the tourist stuff as well.

A lot of the advice I give you depends on what sort of holiday you and your friends want (adventure vs vacation)

For instance, we have plenty of scenery:

The mountains of Dandenong are perfect for sightseeing, you can see the whole city in good visibility from a venue called "Sky High." There is also a restaurant nearby here called "the Cuckoo" which has to be seen to be believed (and it's all you can eat).

Since you are here in summer, the beaches are a must. Mordialloc Beach is stunning and only 30min from the city by public transport. Torquay and Queenscliff are 1.5 hours from the city in the other direction, but they are both incredible surf beaches. If any of your friends are into scuba diving, some of the best wrecks in the world are right around Port Phillip Bay.

My advice in terms of Accommodation is to stay in the city. King's backpackers is a good bet, and on the other side of the cost spectrum is the Ritz on Collins street, which is right above the nightlife.

The nightlife itself, again it depends on if you like to sit and chat over drinks, or dance the night away. Baroq House on Drewery Lane is an excellent pub, as are most of the bars on Chapel Street, but for dancing check out Seven or Billboards. I have links for each of these if you like.

So, what else would you like to know about things to do in Melbourne?

Greenhouse Backpackers is a great place to stay in Melbourne. Flashpackers kind of style, good location
