Roadtrip: texas and the deep south

Ok. Me and a mate are going on a roadtrip from San Francisco to Tallahassee this July. What places in texas and the southern states are worth a stop?

Check gas prices at www.gasbuddy.com. Just enter the location you're interested in, and get up-to-date prices.

From the Grand Canyon, you could make your way to Carlsbad Caverns in southeastern New Mexico. It's pretty awesome. From there, take I-10 to San Antonio and visit the Riverwalk. It's really unique and interesting. Then go up I-35 to historic Gruene (north side of New Braunfels) for lunch at the Gristmill. It's a cool, rustic, old mill that has been turned into a restaurant overlooking the Guadalupe river. Very scenic and interesting. Then continue north on I-35 to Austin to check out the music scene.

New Orleans is 9 hours from Austin. You'll pass through Houston, the 4th largest city in the U.S. It may be worth stopping and checking it out, depending on your interests. Or you may want to just go direct to N.O. and spend more time there. Might as well enjoy it while it lasts; who knows what kind of economic impact this oil spill will have on the city.

If you want to see some really beautiful white sand beaches, stop in Pensacola. Again, do it now before the oil spill ruins them.
