Sydney Christmas & New Year

So, I'm overly excited having along with my roomie just booked up our New years eve plans, we are staying in the YH The Rocks and have booked terrace tickets for the fireworks over sydney harbour New Years eve!
is anyone else staying in the same place or planning on Sydney for Christmas & New Year?
we are a bit unsure of what to do over xmas, as in where to stay as we need somewhere a bit cheaper than the YH which is a bit pricey on our budget, does anyone have any suggestions? and what do backpackers in Sydney do on christmas day? I've never been anywhere other than home in England with family for Christmas day so cannot imagine what it will be like???

x

hi jodie, me and my friend are doing pretty much exactly the same as you, we are at the Harbour YHA from 27th dec till 3rd jan with terrace tickets we are going to be in melbourne for christmas though because we are going to watch the cricket at the MCG on boxing day (Australia vs England) gonna be awesome. Also, I know somebody in melbourne that said if we were stuck ,he would sort us out for christmas dinner etc. Bonus! anyway, might see you at new year!

Me and my friend get to australia in November, starting in Brisbane. Then hopefully christmas and new year in Sydney. Might see you around.

Rick you have the same as us i'm hoping it will be good, couldn't risk staying in Sydney without somethign booked for new year, the terrace is only open til 12.45 i'm presuming/hoping there will be places to go afterwards as new year should be celebrated into new years day if you ask me!? your plans sound good. I need to find a friend to cook me Christmas dinner ha ha!

What actually happens during the street party? In Edinburgh we have live bands & bars basically, I'm guessing it will be the same in Sydney along with the fireworks? How much where tickets? We have our hostel booked but no plans yet, best get a move on I guess!!

Sydney at New Years is a real choose your own adventure.

Alot of our guests from -snip- make a day of it, heading out together in the morning with a stocked esky and a steely resolve to get the best possible spot on the harbour - happy to wait out the day basking in the sun. Others prefer to go to other hotspots out of the city where you can rock up in the evening and still get a good spot for the festivities.

Another options is to ditch the fireworks and head for a festival like party at bondi. There are ticketed dance music events - shorething - and a general streetparty like atmosphere. Seeing the the sun come up on the first day of the year with thousands of other revellers on Bondi beach is pretty special.

Another (of countless) option popular with travellers and locals alike is to purchase a cruise ticket to eat and drink out on the harbour for the fireworks. This is a fantastic (but often pricey) way to spend new years. Some people on these and other forums seem worried about missing out if they do not book soon. In my experience there are ALOT of boats to choose from and the pricing varies alot as well so maybe shop around. It is not necessarily something you would have to have prebooked before arriving in Sydney in my opinion.

What do we do on Christmas Day? We sweat it out and bbq at the beach mate And we do it all with a cold beer in our hands!

You will have a mad time!

Cheers, John -snip-

I'm also in YHA The Rocks over xmas and for NYE (with a terrace ticket), seems like a few off here will be there so we'll probably all bump into each other!

BBQ at the beach and beer for Christmas sounds mad!! can't wait!!
The rocks seems a popular choice it will be good to meet everyone to see in 2011!!
